CLAN’s Children and Family Support Team to visit Orkney

CLAN Cancer Support's Children and Family Support team is encouraging young people aged 6-12 years in Orkney who have been affected by cancer to participate in a series of activities in Kirkwall.

Running from 14-16 August, the activities on offer will include outdoor adventures and sports, arts and crafts, script writing and a recording session at BBC Radio Orkney.

Leigh Ryrie, CLAN Cancer Support’s children and family support worker, who coordinates similar groups in Aberdeen, will be running the activities.

The charity hopes that the events will provide youngsters with an opportunity to spend time with young people of a similar age who have also experienced cancer, whether directly or through a relative or friend.

At the end of each day, young people will also have an opportunity to meet with Leigh on a one-one-basis.

Leigh will also host drop-in sessions at CLAN’s Orkney base at 30 Victoria Street, Kirkwall from 7pm – 8pm on Tuesday, August 14, and 6pm – 8pm on Wednesday, August 15. There is no need to book for the drop-in sessions, and parents and young people are also welcome to come along.

CLAN Cancer Support’s chief executive, Debbie Thomson, said: “A cancer diagnosis affects everyone in the family and our dedicated children and family support team can offer support to youngsters at what is a very difficult time.

“The team have visited Orkney in the past, however this is the first time we have run a series of activities and I am delighted to be able to offer this to local residents.

“I hope the public find our drop-in sessions beneficial as this will provide them with the opportunity to find out more about how the children and family support team can support families when they are with us in CLAN Haven and how they can access the service from Orkney.”

Places are limited. To find out more or to book a place for the children’s activities please contact Karen Scott before August 08, by either emailing karen.scott@clanhouse.org or calling 01856 873393.
