CLAN walks aim to be a breath of fresh air

CLAN Cancer Support has unveiled a line-up of walks, aimed at allowing those who are affected by cancer to take part in a spot of gentle exercise.

CLAN is to hold eight health walks throughout the summer months with the first in the programme taking place on Saturday (June 21) across Westburn and Victoria Parks.

Similar walks have also been announced for Aberdeen beach, Duthie Park, the Deeside railway line, Hazlehead Park and the Buchan railway line and will all be led under the watchful guidance of CLAN volunteers, with the strolls lasting approximately one hour.

The walks will mix gentle exercise and companionship, giving those affected by cancer the chance to meet and talk to others who are dealing with similar experiences.

Jane Adams, CLAN’s volunteering co-ordinator, would be delighted if people were able to join them at one of the walks across the eight week block. Walkers can sign up for as many or as few of the walks as they wish.

She said: “After the success of similar health walk groups in Orkney and Ballater, CLAN introduced the group in Aberdeen at the start of the year and we’ve now extended this to cover more locations, giving people the chance to walk through parts of Aberdeen and the surrounding area that they may not visit regularly.

“Our walks are open to anyone affected by cancer and we are encouraging those who feel they would benefit from a morning of gentle exercise and relaxed chat to join us. We’ve found that a number of our clients enjoy taking time out from their schedules to complete a walk as it gives them some time to reflect and hear from others who are perhaps going through similar experiences.

“The walks aren’t strenuous and can be completed by people of all abilities; we look forward to seeing as many people as possible on the day.”

Those interested in signing up for a walk are asked to contact CLAN on 01224 647000. Full details and dates of all eight walks can be found at www.clanhouse.org
