Support for Children and Young People

A diagnosis of cancer can be difficult for adults to cope with and it is just the same for children and young people.

Services for children and young people

Whether as the patient, a relative or a friend, children and young people can face a difficult and emotional journey.  Often it is too difficult for them to share their feelings with other family members.

Our Support Workers for Children and Young People, Eileen Wheeler, Leigh Ryrie and
Marion Robb, offer a confidential service which will :

  • Provide information
  • Listen to the child or young person
  • Allow the child or young person to explore his or her difficult feelings in a safe and secure environment
  • Undertake loss and bereavement work

Support can be offered on an individual basis or in groups.

Eileen, Leigh and Marion are based at CLAN House but they can also meet children and young people at home or elsewhere (e.g. at school).

For enquiries from children and families please telephone 01224 651033 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We also have a Children's Group (for children affected by cancer) that meets monthly, usually 1pm - 3pm on a Saturday, for a range of activities.  Recently young people have taken part in a drumming workshop, climbing at  Transition Extreme, tubing at Aberdeen Snowsports and a variety of arts and crafts activities.  For more details contact Leigh Ryrie on 01224 64700 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

MIKKI has Cancer (Available from CLAN House, priced £4.99 or £6.00 with P&P)

Mikki has cancerCLAN has published a book designed to help the siblings of a brother or sister who has cancer. 'Mikki has Cancer' is not an explanation of what cancer is, but a book about the impact cancer can have on a young person's life.
The author is Eileen Wheeler, our Children and Young Persons Support Worker, who says "When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the brothers and sisters will also be affected. The aim of the book is to help siblings express their feeling, and to understand that these feelings are normal."
The book has been beautifully illustrated by Iiris Maanoja and is aimed a children between 4 and 8 years old.
We would like to thank Granite City Rocks, Noble Drilling and Morag Anderson's family and friends for their financial support in producing this book.

Mum has Cancer (Available from CLAN House, priced £4.99 or £6.00 with P&P)

Mum has cancerA second book published by CLAN, written by Eileen Wheeler, our Children and Young Persons Support Worker, and beautifully illustrated by Iiris Maanoja.
It is a book about the impact that the diagnosis of a mother's cancer can have on a young child's life. It is a starting point for discussion, giving the adult a way to ask about the child's own experience of a difficult situation.
